Private correspondence of Colin Powell, former Secretary of State and a retired four-star general who served under three Republican presidents, was leaked on Tuesday. The e-mails came through the hacker group DC Leaks.
DCLeaks dumped the new trove of documents with information that allegedly includes the finances and personal data on Democratic donors.
According to these e-mails, Colin Powell had attempted to discourage Hillary Clinton and her team from using him as a scapegoat for her private email server problems.
“Sad thing,” Powell wrote to one confidant, “HRC could have killed this two years ago by merely telling everyone honestly what she had done and not tie me to it.”
“I told her staff three times not to try that gambit. I had to throw a mini-tantrum at a Hamptons party to get their attention. She keeps tripping into these ‘character’ minefields,” Powell lamented. He noted that he had tried to settle the matter by meeting with Clinton aide Cheryl Mills in August.
The emails show Powell regularly corresponding with reporters and friends about the Clinton email server scandal, explaining that his situation was different. When Powell arrived at the State Department, the information technology system was badly dated, he argued. And unlike Clinton, Powell never set up a private server. Instead, he used his personal AOL account, on a server maintained by AOL, and used a government computer for classified communications.
“It is no secret that I used a unclassified personal email account in addition to my classified State computer,’” Powell wrote to the New York Times’ Amy Chozick. He implored the dozens of reporters and producers who emailed him to read his book, It Worked for Me: In Life and Leadership, in which he devoted an entire chapter to his efforts to revamp the State Department’s IT system.
Also back in 2015, Powell and Democratic mega donor Jeffrey Leeds discussed Hillary’s health –
A year earlier, Powell asked Leeds if he read Peggy Noonan’s column about Clinton and her refusal to use a State Department e-mail and a private e-mail server instead. Leeds said he did and he agreed with “80 percent” of Noonan’s piece.
“Now it turns out that other State people were on the Clinton email so none of their emails were captured by the government. I think Hillary can’t believe she might not make it. It’s the one prize she wants. She has everything and she HATES that the president (‘that man’ as the Clintons call him) kicked her ass in 2008.”
Moreover, former the Secretary of State slammed GOP nominee Donald Trump as a “a national disgrace” and an “international pariah,”
In an Aug. 21 email from Powell to Emily Miller, a journalist who was once Powell’s aide, he blasted Trump for embarking on a “racist” movement that believes President Obama was not born in the US.
“Yup, the whole birther movement was racist,” Powell wrote. “That’s what the 99% believe. When Trump couldn’t keep that up he said he also wanted to see if the certificate noted that he was a Muslim.”
And in a December 2015 email to CNN anchor Fareed Zakaria, Powell recounted his aversion to speaking about Trump to the press, writing, “You guys are playing his game, you are his oxygen. He outraged us again today with his comments on Paris no-go for police districts. I will watch and pick the timing, not respond to the latest outrage.”
In another email, Powell wrote to a recipient about his aversion to giving Trump any more media attention: “To go on and call him an idiot just emboldens him.”
Colin Powell confirmed the authenticity of the e-mails and stated: “I have no further comment. I’m not denying it…The hackers have a lot more,” he added.
