The holiday season is upon us once again, and this is often a time when some of us like to reflect on what gives our lives meaning, and set some goals for the coming years.
For most libertarians, the ideals of peace and freedom motivate nearly everything that we do, and we are all trying to work towards a world where our vision is realized.
We are making progress! More people than ever are becoming familiar with the non-aggression principle and its political implications, but there is still work to be done, and there are still millions having their lives ruined by statism.
It breaks my heart to think of the countless number of peaceful victims, prisoners of the drug war who will be spending the holidays in a government dungeon, separated from their families for another year.
Ross Ulbricht, for example, continues to face and conquer various challenges, as he serves a double-life sentence for launching a website (The Silk Road) that made getting drugs safer. I know that when I think about my goals for the next few years, seeing Ulbricht walk out of jail with all of the other “drug war” POWs is surely at the top of my wish list.
Ross is on near-constant lockdown, but this year he started relaying messages to a volunteer on the outside who has been posting them on Twitter to a growing base of supporting followers. Ross shares the highs and lows of the situation he’s in, but overall he shows incredible resilience and determination and seems to have plans in both business and activism when he is finally set free.
If you haven’t already, please sign the Clemency for Ross Ulbricht petition. For what it’s worth, over 100,000 people have already added their name to help us bring Ross home.
Most of us agree on the goal of a stateless society, where people like you, me and Ross all have the freedom to peacefully live our lives to the fullest without threat of state intervention, but how do we get there? When will anarchists gain enough influence to effectively end the horrors of war and mass incarceration?
The answers to these questions are complex and no one person can develop an all-encompassing central plan to address them, which is why it is so important for us to work together. This is what the process of spontaneous order is all about, a collection of individuals each contributing their unique desires and skills to achieve things that central planners can’t even imagine on their own.
The internet has allowed freethinkers to connect in ways which were never possible before, and now, liberty lovers who were once alone in a town full of statists are now able to collaborate online with others who share the same values. To strengthen these connections, it is important to try to meet in person when we can, especially in larger numbers, to help kickstart the spontaneous order that will pave the path to a free society.
One of the best opportunities to meet and mingle with others in this community comes once a year in Acapulco, Mexico. During Anarchapulco, The World’s Premier Liberty Event, truth seekers from all over the world come together for a week of freedom, fun, and friendship.
