President-elect Donald Trump took Twitter by storm Sunday after he tweeted that illegal voters cost him the popular vote in the 2016 presidential election.
“In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally,” Trump said.
Trump’s tweets sent the mainstream media and many Democrats into various states of outrage and denial, with many retaliating in an outburst of vicious news stories, op-eds, and tweets. While the Clinton campaign joined Jill Stein’s effort for a recount that many are calling a scam, even President Barack Obama agrees Trump won (which says a lot). But some sore losers on the left are intent on holding out.
Consider some of the headlines below…
- The Guardian: “Trump claims ‘millions voted illegally’ but offers no evidence“
- A Chicago Tribune columnist called it a “lie“
- San Diego Tribune: “Donald Trump still has no proof ‘millions’ of illegal votes happened”
- Business Insider: “Trump makes baseless claim that ‘millions’ voted illegally, costing him the popular vote”
CNN also flagrantly abused journalistic principles (not that they ever had any) by calling Trump’s claim false, when an unbiased news source would call the claim “undetermined.” And not to be outdone by their pals, the Washington Post topped off the mass denial campaign with the screeching headline “Donald Trump’s new explanation for losing the popular vote? A Twitter-born conspiracy theory.”
And of course there’s many, many more fake news outlets in the mainstream media that I won’t bother listing here, but all of them practically share the same theme: “Trumps a fool, a liar, a conspiracy theorist yada yada yada.”
Meanwhile, it’s almost certain that illegals did vote – and in significant numbers, like the millions.
A 2014 study in the online Electoral Studies Journal shows that in the 2008 and 2010 elections, illegal immigrant votes were in fact quite high.
“We find that some non-citizens participate in U.S. elections, and that this participation has been large enough to change meaningful election outcomes including Electoral College votes, and Congressional elections.”
Specifically, the authors show how illegals may have cast as many as 2.8 million votes in 2008 and 2010. That’s an awful lot of votes. And when you consider the population of illegal inhabitants has only grown exponentially since then, it’s not at all unreasonable to suppose that their vote has too – especially when facing a candidate that has vowed to deport them.
