Earlier today, we reported on the potential of a DNS DDoS cannon being used to commmit large scale DNS Distributed Denial Of Service (DDos) attacks against major internet trafficker DYN.
This journalist has reported on We Are Change about having a private conversation with someone a few months back that claimed they were working on what they called “the world’s largest DNS DDoS cannon.” Now DYN is reporting that they are now experiencing a third wave of attacks against their DNS servers.
Today’s internet blackout is potentially that individual hacker’s display of power. An unlikely alternative is that the United Nations has taken over the internet and will be disabling certain websites that you love because the UN hates fun. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is reportedly investigating this incident now.
DYN hosts several popular sites DNS so what is happening is essentially computers are failing to look up the website due to connection problems not on the user end but on DYN’s end.
What’s the problem? The problem is that DNS is what is used for your computer to communicate with a website if your DNS look up fails then you will be given a connection error page.
DNS is just a fancy way to say phone-book for an Ip Address, without a connection to DNS an IP address fails to call the IP address that you dial it to. Essentially its an attack in the middle of your computer and the web server itself as it’s not attacking a host server it’s attacking the DNS on the server that hosts the DNS resolve address that deciphers computer IP addresses back to your display as a domain name like www.wearechange.org.
We will continue to keep you updated on this throughout the day as hackers seem to be targeting DYN DNS servers preventing you from connecting to big websites that require DYN’s DNS server to function. As you can see in the pictures below from Level 3 Communications in the early morning around 6 a.m. the east coast was a target. During the afternoon the west coast became a target. This is a very sophisticated attack stay tuned.
