Wikileaks has released three classified CIA espionage orders revealing details of an alleged seven-month long spying campaign by the agency ahead of the 2012 French presidential election.

In a press release, WikiLeaks noted:
“The CIA assessed that President Sarkozy’s party was not assured re-election. Specific instructions tasked CIA officers to discover Sarkozy’s private deliberations ‘on the other candidates’ as well as how he interacted with his advisors.”
The seven pages of documents appear to be classified orders for intelligence operatives to gather information regarding candidates’ political strategies and internal communications.
Instructions for CIA operatives, according to the documents, included documenting French presidential candidates’ political strategies, views of the U.S. and sources of political funding.
A press release from WikiLeaks states:
“Named specifically as targets are the French Socialist Party (PS), the National Front (FN) and Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) together with current President Francois Hollande, then President Nicolas Sarkozy, current round one presidential front runner Marine Le Pen, and former presidential candidates Martine Aubry and Dominique Strauss-Khan.”

WikiLeaks’ release of the documents comes amid growing tensions between Trump and the intelligence community over leaks of classified information that have portrayed people close to Trump in a negative light.

The release has been timed to coincide with the upcoming 2017 presidential election in France, the first round of which will be held on April 23. According to latest polls, Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron are favorites to go forward to the election run-off.
WikiLeaks is becoming well-known for playing a role in elections. Last year, it released tens of thousands of personal emails from political parties and high-profile aides. One such person was John Podesta, a close confidante of Hillary Clinton, the failed Democratic Party presidential candidate.
