Brussels Crime Lab Fire: Arson To Destroy Evidence

We Are Change

Several men rammed a car through the gates of a Belgian crime lab, the National Institute of Criminology, before committing arson — presumably to destroy evidence, according to Belgian authorities.

What first appeared to be yet another terrorist attack, with reports of explosions near a police station, may just be criminals trying to commit obstruction of justice by destroying evidence.

At approximately 2 a.m. Brussels time, attackers drove a car into the gate of the Institute of Criminology, then set fire to the building. No reports of casualties or injuries have been reported at this time. According to the BBC –

Prosecutor’s spokeswoman Ine Van Wymersch said a car broke through fences at about 02:00 (00:00 GMT).

Van Wymersch said there was “sensitive material” inside the laboratories, but it is not yet clear what was destroyed in the fire. There were no casualties.

Five people arrested nearby were later released without charge.

Initial reports in Belgian media said a bomb had exploded. Van Wymersch said that while a bomb was unlikely to have detonated, it was impossible to fully rule out that scenario.

“The location was not chosen randomly,” she said. “It’s an important site, that includes sensitive documents relating to current investigations.”

“The possibility of a terrorist act is not confirmed. It goes without saying that several individuals may have wanted to destroy evidence related to their legal cases,” Van Wymersch added. “The case was being treated as arson.”

Police believe the location was targeted and not at random, but they have not ruled out a terror attack. The police theory is someone wanted to make their legal case disappear out of the judicial system.

The world has seen a history of mysterious fires, including when the JFK library caught fire in a mysterious explosion during the Boston bombing, the time JPMorgan’s gold vault incinerated, and when after the Panama papers were leaked, a fire happened at the IRS building’s basement. In other words, nothing to see here folks.

Don’t think too hard about a car ramming through a gate then a fire being set to the National Institute of Criminology.

Although not yet classified as a terrorist attack, Belgium’s terror alert level remains high after attacks on Brussels airport and the city’s metro last March claimed the lives of 32 people orchestrated by the self proclaimed “Islamic State.”
